Ancillary Products

An ancillary product is an add-on insurance that works with your main insurance to offer additional financial support to help offset the expenses that you would otherwise have to pay on your own. Bundling these and other ancillary products with your existing health insurance policies can provide you with comprehensive coverage and peace of mind. There are no specific enrollment periods for these, so ancillary products can be added at any time of year.

Dental Insurance

Dental insurance comes in handy when you need major dental treatment, which can be expensive to pay for yourself.

If you have a Medical Advantage, Marketplace or Group plan, you may already have dental insurance built in. Standalone dental policies are available for people who don’t have access to those types of plans.

Whether dental insurance is worth it depends on how much it costs and what you get from the coverage. If you typically only need cleanings a couple of times every year, then insurance is not necessarily going to pay for itself. However, if you have an unexpected major expense such as a root canal or crown you could be looking at a pretty hefty expense without insurance. And because dental insurance has waiting periods for those types of services, you won’t be able to use it right away for those hefty expenses if you don’t already have it.

This is the way that insurance companies cover dental services:

You can start a dental plan at any time of year. Some plans are effective the next day and others start the 1st of the month following enrollment.
Most cover preventive care at 100%, basic services like fillings and simple extractions at 80% and major services at 50%.
Many have waiting periods for major services like root canals and crowns from 6 months to a full year, with some offering a small percentage of coverage (10 – 15%) during the waiting period.
Some companies will waive the waiting periods for people who have had prior dental coverage in the 63 days
prior to enrolling.
Some cover implants and orthodontics.
Maximum benefits vary from $1000/year up to $5000/year.
Some have no waiting periods but step up the benefits and coverage over 3 years.
Some cover only preventive care with no coverage for major services at all.

Hospital Indemnity

These types of policies are intended for seniors who are already on Medicare to supplement their out-of-pocket costs for expenses that are not covered by their insurance plan(s) like deductibles or copays for hospitalization, skilled nursing or home health care.

There are some that complement the specific copays and coinsurance found on many Advantage plans and help reduce the financial obligation for the maximum out of pocket.

Benefits can be paid directly to the insured or sent to the provider and are paid in addition to other health coverage. Most plans pay a hospital benefit as well as optional rider for skilled nursing, outpatient procedures, ER or Ambulance services, cancer fixed indemnity and Outpatient Rehabilitation.

Some plans are specifically for just home care or nursing home care. Some carriers offer Guaranteed Issue/Acceptance which means that no health questions will be asked to qualify for the plan.
